Let’s assume you’re shipping a container from Europe to the US and there’s a bit of space left. Space that would fit a subcompact or smaller, meaning you could ship this car ‘for free’. So here’s the challenge: find me the right car! Links to search engines in English provided below:

Requirements:

1990 or older

€1500 or less. Less=better

3.70 meters or less in length*

Has to be street legal and driveable.

!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! (note that you might have to put the minimum to €0)

Trust me, they are a ton of fun to drive, especially RHD.

How long is a 205 GTI? If <3.7m, that.

Why, a red Pug 205 CTI, of course!

There will be one in there already. A CTi and a GTi though... Both are 3.705 meters in lenght by the way.

I don’t have access to RHD ones, but I can get LHD ones. Halfway decent ones aren’t overly cheap though.

This DAF 46 is 3.8 meters in length.
If you take off the bumpers you might just squeeze it in...

Sorry for cheating.

Define ‘not overly cheap’. One in reasonable condition could fetch $8-10k in North America.

Maybe hunt a Beetle? Maybe a RHD unit for rarity (or sell it in America for a profit because uniqueness over the thousands of other Beetles).

Edit: nvm, too long unless you take off the bumpers.

This is true, but with two cars we’re close to budget as is, a third one is stretching things even if it’s very cheap. Rationally you’re absolutely right.

Full of them is an overstatement, but it’s a great suggestion. I was looking for Pandas, but they didn’t survive as well apparently. If I recall correctly people frequently used Marbella doors on Pandas because the SEAT doors weren’t as rust prone.

Half a year inspection left, no known faults that renders it unsafe/undrivable (other than being a Marbella), €250 . Sounds like a deal to me.

That rear wheel size and wheel wheel make me irrationally irritated. I realize it’s probably to fit another set of seats or a flat rear floor, but they are too damn small. Argh!

Honestly, haven't checked prices in a while. Obviously a low miles, quality find will be more than your average daily driver. There are good barn finds out there though if you look hard enough. You might get a good price of you cat someone in financial problems or don't realize what they have. Like any find, sometimes the shiny on the outside hides issues underneath so always get one checked out by a professional before you buy.

How about a Lancia then? Shame this one isn’t alcantara...

I don’t care that much about mileage to be honest. I’d rather have a high mileage example that racked up the mileage due to long hauls than one of those low mileage units that were subjected to nothing but stop and go traffic.
